About

Joseph Mullins

I was born in New Rochelle NY in 1954.  I Studied at the Art Students League with Mario Cooper, Irwin Greenberg & Timothy Clark. I am currently living in Croton on Hudson.

Some of my work is started and completed on-site. Some is started on-site and finished in the studio. I always travel with enough art supplies to make a sketch or study. I make many sketches when traveling to new and unfamiliar landscapes which I find the most inspirational.

My work includes portraits, cityscapes and landscapes. I work primarily in
watercolor, oil pastels and pen and ink. While most of my work is of the
Hudson River Valley, Eastern Long Island, and New England, the particular place, mountain or ridge line is really secondary. The focus is the mood,
time of day, season, state of the atmosphere, after a rain or just before a storm.

I began making impressions from fish I caught during a vacation in the Adirondacks in the summer of 2005. I have been making these impressions ever since. This method is called Gyotaku (Japanese, from gyo “fish” + taku “rubbing”). It is a traditional form of Japanese fish printing, dating from the mid 1800s, used by fishermen to record their catch.

I have exhibited throughout the Hudson River Valley and New England including The Coop (Peekskill, NY), Croton on Hudson Free Library, Flat Iron Gallery (Peekskill), Garrison Art Center, John C. Hart Memorial Library (Shrub Oaks, N.Y), Hendrick Hudson Library (Montrose NY), Hooper House (Nyack N.Y.), Lyme New Hampshire Public Library, Norwich Vermont Art Center, the Raptor Center (Woodstock, Vermont), Peekskill Coffeehouse, Rutheny’s Art Gallery (Croton on Hudson, N.Y.), Gravity Gallery (Norwalk, CT). I am a member of the Croton Council of the Arts, the Art Students League of New York and the Garrison Art Center.

I have taught painting and life drawing at the Croton on Hudson Continuing Education Program, the Croton Cortlandt Center for the Arts and to private individuals. I have conducted workshops in Gyotaku print making and painting, including Convent of the Sacred Heart Academy, Greenwich CT, CET Elementary School and Croton Harmon High School.

I am available for private and group instruction, workshops and framing.
